MOST BUSINESS LEADERS navigate the world with a ruler, with mechanical models and linear thinking, restlessly searching for best practices and clear-cut answers. They see it as a Mondrian painting ; rigidly structured, comprehensible and predictable.

 

But it is increasingly clear that our world is much more like a Pollock ; apparently unstructured, difficult to comprehend and unpredictable. To flourish in this perplexing landscape, we need new ways of seeing & being, not better rulers.

 

I help leaders to transform their inner Mondrian so they can see anew and venture beyond the known’ with confidence & clarity of thought.

 The Dutch painter and founder of the De Stijl art movement, Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) has had an enormous influence, not only on the course of 20th-century abstract art but also on fields outside the domain of painting, such as design, architecture and fashion. He is renowned for his use of straight lines and primary colours: Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Gray, and Blue (1921) is a perfect example.

 

 The American abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) described his art as “motion made visible memories, arrested in space.” He made his most famous paintings between 1947 and 1950, his so-called ‘drip period,’ of which Number 14: Gray is a particularly striking example. Pollock strove to free the line from representational image-making and make it a function of pure movement.

 

I often use  and  as an artful metaphor for understanding the differences between complicatedness and complexity.

  When I say ‘coaching’, I actually man that my work is a combination of coaching, mentoring, guiding, exploring, listening, looking, observing, sensemaking, questioning, reflecting, futuring, dreaming, meditating, inspiring, sharing, …-ing. In Do Design: Why beauty is key to everything (2016), Alan Moore calls this ‘The philosophy of ’ing.’

  My work with senior executives is a combination of coaching, mentoring, guiding, advising, supporting, exploring, connecting, listening, looking, observing, noticing, questioning, sense-making, not-knowing, thinking, doing, not-doing, reflecting, dreaming, mind-wandering, flâneuring, meditating, inspiring, experiencing, sharing, rising, falling, being, ... becoming. Together, this is my philosophy of ’ing
