The Dutch painter founder of the De Stijl art movement, Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) has had an enormous influence, not only on the course of 20th-century abstract art but also on fields outside the domain of painting, such as design, architecture and fashion. He is renowned for his use of straight lines and primary colours: Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Gray, and Blue is a perfect example.¶
